Online learning powers collaborative learning in a preferred environment to the students by harnessing the power of social networking.

Study says Facebook and other networking sites including Twitter and Instagram consume a good 50 minutes of your precious time each day.
If this stat bewilders you then don't forget there are over 1.65 billion monthly active Facebook users all over the world and at least five pages are being created every second on Facebook. No wonder these social networking websites are making a wave to connect people and engage them in commenting, sharing or liking.

Online learning is capitalizing this power of social networking sites and directing it to enhance learners engagement in studies. And advanced technology remains, as it started suffusing with everything in our life, the key igniter of upgrading the framework of our educational ecosystem.

The necessity of transforming social networking sites to social interactive learning sites depends on the fact that learning in traditional institutes are becoming less 'active'. And active, by every means, refers to a learning that imparts career-oriented programmes, passes on hands-on experience and results in a good job.

Learning by sharing is cool! So much so that even a non-participating student is being engaged in asking, answering and sharing his thoughts virtually in front of others in social media sites. The reason is that the digital natives of this decade inherits the power to acclimatise with technology-enables learning mode seamlessly.

Online education vouches for learning by collaborating with other students and educators as well. This mode of learning empowers students to show efficiency by helping others. And the opportunity to become a top contributor by answering questions, solving problems and creating and sharing study resources is undoubtedly the key factor to enhance the engagement of studies among the students.

Dr. Richard J. Light of Harvard University's School of Education is up for the implementation of online social learning, he says, “This group learning format appeals to younger, socially conscious learners and is built around the notion that many minds are better than one.”

Ease of accessibility is another salient feature of learning through social networking websites. A learner can carry his study resources along with him, and can opt for learning whenever he wants. Social networking sites have the attributes of online discussions boards which serves the purpose of learning while working due its flexible nature. One can literally ask questions related to web development in Arts class, such is the magnanimity of collaborative learning.

Now the million dollar question – How effective it can be to introduce social media learning in classroom to cater knowledge?

Utterly good, if learners manage to leverage the power of social media to acquire knowledge. Online learning backs up social, mobile and peer-to-peer learning. And the implementation of social medial learning in classroom will be considered as an essential mode of obtaining knowledge if the learners can manage to spend a good 30 minutes of their daily share of using networking sites as a platform to study and share.
